This music video was filmed on board the USS Missouri while it was stationed at the former Long Beach Naval Shipyard at Pier D along with the crew. It was the first time that the United States Navy had allowed a music video to be recorded aboard a Navy vessel, making it an historic event.
The song came out on her "Heart of Stone" album in 1989, being certified gold in September, platinum in November, and it went double platinum in July 1990.
Even though I have never been a Cher fan, when the video first began airing on MTV in 1989, I found it exciting simply for the fact that she was granted permission to film a music video on a US military vessel with the actual crew. This type of situation was absolutely off-limits, but somehow Cher's "people" received the rights to film on certain sections of the ship. And with the actual crew members of the USS Missouri. Nowadays, however, it is not any big deal to see footage aboard ANY military vessel. But this was 1989, and she was a first.
Lyrics:
I don't know why I did the things I did
I don't know why I said the things I said
Pride's like a knife, it can cut deep inside
Words are like weapons, they wound sometimes
I didn't really mean to hurt you
I didn't wanna see you go
I know I made you cry
But baby
Chorus:
If I could turn back time
If I could find a way
I'd take back those words that have hurt you
And you'd stay
If I could reach the stars
I'd give them all to you
Then you'd love me, love me
Like you used to do
If I could turn back
My world was shattered, I was torn apart
Like somebody took a knife
And drove it deep in my heart
When you walked out that door
I swore that I didn't care
But I lost every thing darling then and there
Too strong to tell you I was sorry
Too proud to tell you I was wrong
I know that I was blind, and darling
